Retin-A (tretinoin) is a topical form of vitamin A used to treat severe nodular acne. Do not apply Retin-A to irritated, chapped skin. Avoid using it if you have eczema as it can worsen the condition of your skin and cause serious harmful effects. Retin-A has been reported to increase skin sensitivity – your skin is more likely to be affected by direct sunrays or get irritated. If you are exposed to direct sunlight make sure you wear protective clothing and apply sunscreen with minimum protection factor of 15 (SPF 15).
Avoid using products that can irritate your skin, such as alcohol-containing products, permanent chemicals, skin cleansers that are too radical, harsh soaps or shampoos. Make sure you read the label of each product you purchase to prevent an unpleasant reaction. Retin-A can be harmful to an unborn baby and can pass into breast milk, affecting the health or a nursing infant. It is therefore very important that you avoid getting pregnant and do not start breastfeeding during the entire period of treatment. If you think you may have got pregnant consult your doctor as soon as possible. Avoid washing the area to which you applied this medicine for at least an hour to make sure it is fully absorbed.
